Character History:
Papyrus is a skeleton-monster of the Underground, who for as long as he can recall has lived together with Sans, his brother, in the small, snowy city of Snowdin. The only information that game gives us about where he came, and maybe when, is a little shopkeeper in the city, who talks about the brothers just 'showing up one day', and being fun to watch.
All monsters in the Underground, including him, looked for freedom to live above, under a sky and on the land. A Royal Guard was formed by King Asgore, King of the Monsters, to capture any humans who ventured into the underground, and take their souls. Over the course of many, many years, they had collected seven of eight souls necessary to cross onto the land. This Royal Guard was something that Papyrus yearned for-- he desired very little else besides becoming a part of this faction for the popularity and friendship that he hoped it would bring him.
The last soul to enter the Underground was a young human called Frisk. They would complete the soul count needed to escape the underground. When Papyrus met Frisk, after slight teasing from his brother, he created puzzles and trails for the human to complete, eager to bring them to Asgore and gain his formal title into the Royal Guard. However...in this timeline (as there are several others), Frisk ignores all of his puzzles. He sets them for Frisk to complete and the puzzles are set to the side. He is left with an odd bewilderment. He had hoped secretly that they, too, could have been an avid puzzle lover, as Papyrus is.
Frisk makes to leave Snowdin, and is stopped by Papyrus for a final duel. He tells Frisk only what his own heart tells them to, being the good-hearted monster that he is. "You're going down a dangerous path," he warns, and immediately softens the mood with his ever positive encouragement. He tells the little human that he would guide them, and take care of them, so they would not have to endure such hardships. In the end, after a long battle with him, Papyrus chooses to SPARE Frisk, and not fight any longer, wishing only to be friends. Frisk easily cuts him down, shattering his heart and ending his life. Even while surprised, Papyrus encourages Frisk to do goodness with the life they're given. He turns to dust, and enters Wonderland.
It should be stated that Papyrus heavily relies upon Sans for emotional comfort and guidance. He treasures his relationship with his brother over all else (though becoming a member of the Royal Guard would be amazing). Often times when Papyrus would doubt himself, Sans would speak a good word into his ear, offering the encouragement that Papyrus needed to give to others. If, indeed, Sans was able to remember information from past timelines, that trait was not given to Papyrus.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Papyrus' true skill is undefined in the game. His soft heart keeps him from unleashing any full potential that he may have, but it has been stated by Undyne later on in the game that Papyrus is actually quite powerful. Because his heart is so soft, however, it would be cruel to add him to the Royal Guard due to the fact that when a human's soul is harvested, the human dies, and Undyne knows that poor Paps could never do such a thing, even if it meant not being on the Royal Guard.
With that being said, Papyrus can control the gravity of one person at a time, and summon bones to attack with from the sky, from the ground, and even into his hands to hit others with. In game, he focuses mostly on ground attacks, causing bones to rush from the earth and pierce multiple targets quickly and painfully. He wears a costume (supposedly made a few weeks before the timeline began), and has refused to take it off, calling it his 'Battle-Body'. It offers minimal protection to his upper torso and his pelvic region.
Papyrus also has an immeasurable amount of energy. He requires a bedtime story before he can sleep peacefully, and can become passionate about basically anything, as long as it is good in nature. He is also easily distracted...and often times the butt of a joke. He also hates puns. ♥
Third-Person Sample:
The world is...dark. Papyrus blinks wearily, standing up and dusting himself off; not that he can see terribly well, or very far. The silence is thick in the air, and it could be said that the tall skeleton's nerves were just a little bit on edge. "H-hello??? Little human???"
The little human-- Frisk. Frisk was standing right there, holding that knife. Looking at Papyrus with eyes of malice. He lifts his hand so that his chin could rest on it and allows his body to sway side to side, trying to muster up his memories and gather the details of what could have happened. This place he was in-- it wasn't Snowdin, that's for sure.
"Little human??? Are you here???" He paused, raising his voice. "ARE YOU HURT??? I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL COME AND FIND YOU!! PLEASE DO NOT MOVE!"
Papyrus could hear Undyne's voice in the back of his head as he began walking around in this vast, dark emptiness, yelling for a child that had tried to kill him. 'Paps, you're WAY too nice,' she would say. He scoffed quietly, filling himself with both courage and determination.
He just couldn't be convinced of someone being... too nice, nor could someone not be nice at all. If Frisk had tried to kill him, surely they must have had a reason! Maybe he could have helped the little human better. The way that they handled their blade was somewhat sloppy-- maybe with some daily training Frisk could get better, and be able to defeat whoever their enemy was! What an amazing plan!
"Truly, I am a genius!" He cackled slightly, quite proud of his plan, and then stopped. "I suppose...I have to find the little human first," he glanced around warily. Then...a horrible thought dawned on him.
What if he had accidentally hurt Frisk too much? What if they were here somewhere suffering alone?!
"LITTLE HUMAN, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME," he shouted, picking up the pace on his walk, "YOU MUST MAKE A NOISE. I AM FAMILIAR WITH THE SOUNDS OF BARKING DOGS AND THE NOISES THAT A GYFTROT CAN MAKE. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED EXAMPLES OF THEIR SOUNDS!!"
"...bro..."
He stopped short. There was no one around him, not that he could see, but that sounded like...
"Sans? SANS, ARE YOU HERE TOO? YOU HAVE TO HELP ME, I THINK I LOST THE HUMAN!!"
But there was no answer. Only a muffled crying that Papyrus could not hear well enough to recognize. It was slightly frustrating-- all he wanted was to help the human along, and see his brother. All he wanted was to make spaghetti with one of his best friends, Undyne, and keep the little city of Snowdin safe from danger.
All he wanted was an answer.
"Hello...?"
